In October 2010, the National Science Foundation awarded funding to the University of Minnesota's St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, to renovate the Laboratory's research facilities. In addition, the University allocated Minnesota Higher Education Asset Preservation and Replacement (HEAPR) funds to ensure the renovation also brings this Depression Era building up to present day building codes.

The University selected Perkins + Will as architects for the renovation.
